Dear Sir,
As deputy leader of the Maningpool Municipal Orchestra (I share the first desk with Mr. Constant Eltham and frequently lead the concerts during one of his illnesses or other absences) I feel it incumbent on me to voice to you a theory of my own I have formed on the murder of Sir Noel Grampian, although I need hardly explain that it would have been quite impossible for me actually to see anything, as I was playing at the time. But I am convinced in my own mind that nobody in the orchestra could possibly have fired that shot. It would have been quite impossible for anybody to do so foolhardy a thing, and in my opinion it is waste of time to look for an explanation of that kind. What I feel sure happened is that somebody was concealed in the organ console, which was unoccupied that evening and is, as you may have noticed, screened on the side of the audience by a wooden partition. It would have been easy for anybody to hide there after the interval (anybody in evening dress, at any rate), as there were so many strangers present in the orchestra, men whom even we, the permanent members, did not all know so much as by sight. Personally I should have thought nothing whatever of it if any unknown man in a dinner-jacket had quite openly entered the green-room with me and afterwards appeared on the platform through one of those two upper doors leading down from the organ. Who could have hit upon such an ingenious idea it is, I am afraid, for you to discover, but I am perfectly certain that you will find my theory to accord with the facts, if indeed you ever solve this extremely difficult problem. If I have contributed ever so little to that solution, I shall, of course, be delighted.
Believe me,
Yours very truly,
Francis J. Holcombe.
